Air France Flight 447 was intact when it hit the Atlantic Ocean, according to the first report released by the French accident bureau investigating the disaster in which all 228 onboard lost their lives.

The Airbus A330 did not break up in flight, and neither was it in a nose or tail-down dive, according to investigators. A study of 660 pieces of debris showed that it had shattered only when it hit the sea belly-first.

Virgin Atlantic has sparked outrage after awarding senior managers a 40 percent pay rise, despite announcing 600 possible job cuts on Wednesday due to week demand.

Staff have accused chief executive, Steve Ridgway, of a lack of moral leadership after his salary rose from £500,000 to £700,000. Meanwhile the combined pay of the top three directors rose from £1.4 million to £2 million, according to company accounts.

International tourism fell 8% in the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2008, according to the new edition of the thrice-yearly UNWTO World Tourism Barometer.

Arrivals fell to 247m arrivals, but the tourism body estimates that the rate of decline is expected to ease during the remainder of 2009. Current market conditions mean that international tourism is now forecast to decrease by between 4% and 6% in 2009.

Travelodge has announced plans to spend €61m building three new hotels in Spain.

The properties in Barcelona, Valencia and Seville will be constructed in a joint venture with property developer Citygrove, which has previously developed a number of Travelodge hotels in the UK. All three will open in 2011.

Marriott and Starwood have announced plans to install high-resolution video conferencing systems in city hotels around the world, in a sign that businesses are replacing travel with technology.

Marriott has inked a deal with AT&T to install the Cisco-designed Telepresence systems in 25 hotels in cities including London, New York, San Francisco, Shanghai, Paris and Frankfurt. The systems will go into a variety of Marriott, J.W. Marriott and Renaissance hotels. The hotel giant expects some will be operational by late October.
